Kopi O, Kopi C or Kopi Peng? A Simple Guide to Kopitiam Coffee Orders

Walk into any Malaysian kopitiam and you will hear orders like “Kopi O kosong peng!” It sounds like a code, but it follows a few simple rules. Once you know them you can order exactly the cup you like.

The base: what goes into the cup

OrderWhat you get
KopiCoffee with sweetened condensed milk
Kopi OBlack coffee with sugar
Kopi CCoffee with evaporated milk and sugar
Kopi O kosongBlack coffee, no sugar
Kopi C kosongCoffee with evaporated milk, no sugar

Adjusting sweetness

  • Kosong: no sugar
  • Siew dai: less sweet
  • Ka dai: extra sweet

Adjusting strength

  • Kaw (or gao): stronger, thicker, more coffee
  • Po: thinner, lighter

Hot or iced

Add peng at the end for iced. Kopi C peng is iced coffee with evaporated milk and sugar.

Putting it together

Start with the base, then add sweetness, strength and temperature:

  1. Kopi O kosong: black coffee, no sugar
  2. Kopi siew dai: coffee with condensed milk, less sweet
  3. Kopi C kaw peng: strong iced coffee with evaporated milk

Why the coffee itself matters

All these drinks start from the same coffee powder. Traditional Nanyang coffee is roasted dark for the deep, fragrant taste that holds up to condensed milk and ice. If the powder or the brewing changes from cup to cup, every one of these orders tastes different. That is why kopitiams that want consistency use the same powder and a written brewing method for every staff member.
